David Goldsmith brings more than 25 years of experience helping nonprofits, foundations, philanthropists, and public-sector partners clarify priorities, strengthen relationships, and build the strategies needed to advance meaningful impact.
Through Goldsmith & Company, David advises nonprofit executives, boards, donors, and foundation leaders at moments when mission, resources, relationships, and opportunity need to come into clearer alignment. His work sits at the intersection of philanthropic strategy, fundraising counsel, institutional partnerships, board and donor engagement, and practical planning.
David’s approach is grounded in a simple belief: strong fundraising and effective philanthropy begin with clarity. Leaders need a compelling case, trusted relationships, realistic plans, and the confidence to act. Donors and foundations need a clear sense of purpose, strong nonprofit partners, and ways to understand whether their giving is advancing the change they hope to support.
Over the course of his career, David has helped secure and mobilize more than $30 million in philanthropic and public support across education, youth development, civic engagement, workforce development, housing, health, aging, and community-based initiatives. His experience includes senior development and strategy roles with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, The Leadership Academy, and FEGS Health & Human Services, as well as advisory work with philanthropists, foundations, and nonprofit leaders.
David has helped shape major education, public humanities, youth development, aging, and health-related initiatives; advised nonprofit leaders and boards on fundraising strategy and donor engagement; and supported philanthropic partnerships that connect values, institutions, and long-term impact. His philanthropic advising work includes helping donors clarify goals, identify mission-aligned nonprofit partners, structure thoughtful grants and partnerships, and review impact over time.
Known for careful listening, strategic judgment, and practical counsel, David helps leaders move beyond vague ambition or isolated fundraising tasks toward clearer priorities, stronger relationships, and more actionable paths forward.
My approach
Every engagement begins with understanding the mission, context, relationships, constraints, and ambitions behind the work.
David helps leaders identify what is strongest, what is missing, and what needs to become clearer for donors, funders, boards, partners, or grantees.
The work turns priorities into cases, partnership opportunities, donor and funder conversations, grantmaking frameworks, or practical action plans.
David helps clients take the next step with greater clarity, stronger alignment, and a better understanding of how relationships and resources can advance mission-driven change.
